Lady Cougars Fall in Semifinals of Oakland Tournament

The Genesee Community College women's volleyball team went unbeaten in pool play at the Oakland Community College tournament over the weekend. However, the team ran out of steam as it fell in the semi-finals to Ancilla College of Indiana (26-30, 23-30). GCC beat Delta College (30-19, 20-21), Oakland CC (30-24, 30-26), Henry Ford (30-14, 30-22), Lake Michigan (30-21, 30-28) and Alpena (30-17, 30-21).

Freshman middle Alyssa Fitchette was selected to the all-tournament team. She had 66 kills, 43 digs and 17 blocks on the weekend. Lauren Spiotta had 40 kills and 16 blocks while Danielle Berryman added 36 kills, 10 blocks and 13 service aces. Jen Martins had 112 assists to go along with her 10 aces.

Earlier in the week, the Lady Cougars continued the unbeaten streak in WNYAC/Region III play. Genesee beat Jamestown 30-17, 30-26, 28-30, and 30-24. Fitchette led the team with 16 kills. Berryman had 12 kills and five aces. Martins set for 36 assists on the night.

The Lady Cougars are now 27-6 overall and 6-0 against WNYAC opponents. The team will host Monroe CC on Thursday before heading out onto the road for their next five competitions including tournaments at Hagerstown, Maryland and the Community College of Rhode Island.
