GCC’s Ziolkowski to Display Personal Photo Exhibit at GoArt!

Alone: A State of Being Begins Jan. 19
Tue, 01/05/2016 - 09:52 - Joe Ziolkowski's work from his Alone: A State of being exhibit

Batavia, NY- Joe Ziolkowski spends long periods of time alone, traveling and walking to populated and very remote locations around the world. He has challenged himself to have self-trust and reach what he once considered unattainable destinations, focusing pent up energy to photograph himself within dynamic environments, knowing someday he would exhibit his broad body of art. Beginning January 19, 2016, he brings his world-wide efforts to downtown Batavia, New York. Ziolowski, GCC instructor of photography, will display Alone: A State of Being at GoArt! from January 19 – February 25, 2016 giving viewers a chance to see his multimedia collection.

“The work selected for this show has been culled from thousands of digital panoramas, pinhole photographs and videos generated during the past several years,” Ziolkowski noted. “There is an ongoing relationship with the various portfolios created on different formats that give each viewer a different perspective from similar locations.”

As the artist, Ziolkowski selects the vantage point and composes the frame, making the lens the viewers’ eye. As the subject, he places himself within the frame and guides the viewer through the frame with his own gaze. His portfolios include photographs with 35mm analog black and white film, 4 x 5 inch pinhole film, DSLR, mirror-less and iPhone digital cameras. He also documents many of the locations he visits with video in short clips. Ultimately, many of the photographs are self-portraits, however he also exhibits photographs viewed from the camera’s perspective.

“I combine the latest technology with standard 4 x 5 inch film pinhole process to encourage the viewer to consider the passage of time present in the evolution of the photographic process,” Ziolkowski said.

An opening reception for Ziolkowski’s Alone: A State of Being is planned for Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. GoArt! is located at Seymour Place, 201 East Main Street in Batavia. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and by appointment. For further information, visit www.GOart.org.
