Genesee Community College invites the public to the first of four presentations in the new Historical Horizons Lecture Series. The first lecture occurs Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 7 p.m. and is presented by Tom Schobert, president of Buffalo Civil War Roundtable and a Robert E. Lee impressionist. His talk entitled, “The Alamo – They Myth, the Reality…and John Wayne,” will cover the story of the Alamo and how many the legends and myths have developed through the years. Since the day the battle occurred in 1836, the Alamo has garnered plenty of intrigue and mystique with varying perspectives. Schobert will provide an overview of documented facts, touch on the cultural impact, and share numerous photos and even a few artifacts from his personal collection.
Historical Horizons is sponsored by GCC’s new History Club and was developed from the success of the Civil War Initiative which featured dozens of events throughout the past three years commemorating the 150 anniversary of the Civil War. This fall, a different historical lecture is scheduled on each first Wednesday of the month. All events are FREE and open to the public and located in the Conable Technology Building on GCC’s Batavia Campus in room T102. The other three lectures are:
• October 7: “Hell’s Half-Acre: The Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania”
• November 4: “The Philosophy of History: What does it Matter?”
• December 7: “Recalling Reconstruction: The Ugly Story of a Splendid Failure”
