Batavia, NY- As the International Admissions Specialist at Genesee Community College, Carrie Sputore works daily to fulfill the dreams of students around the globe. This spring she’s joined other SUNY Admissions professionals in an effort to help make a wish come true for a Western New York child with a life-threatening medical condition. The SUNYCAP (State University of New York College Admissions Professionals) organization is working to raise $7,500 for Make-A-Wish Western New York, enough money to fulfill one wish. Their efforts will culminate during the SUNYCAP annual conference June 17-19, 2015 in Niagara Falls. “We have an annual fundraising dinner on June 18th and we hope to make our donation at that time,” Sputore said.
They are working to raise the funds in part through the SUNY Campus Make-A-Wish STAR campaign. Sputore coordinated the campaign and nineteen SUNY Admissions Offices around the state, including GCC, are selling $1 Make-A-Wish STARs. These stars are displayed on campus at GCC in the cafeteria and at the Warsaw Campus Center. The GCC Admissions Office and the Warsaw Campus Center have raised more than $300 towards the $7,500 goal thanks to students, faculty, staff, and community members who’ve donated.
Sputore’s belief in Make-A-Wish has been affirmed by personal experiences shared by local families and GCC students. During the campaign, Sputore was moved when a father and current student graciously donated in the name of his daughter, Hailey Coniber. Hailey was granted an unforgettable Wish of a Disney cruise with her family. Another student, who is an inspiration to others at the College, shared her Wish memory when she donated. “She was granted a Wish to visit New York City for two weeks when she was eight years old,” Sputore said.
Those interested in donating to the STAR campaign may do so at GCC’s Admissions office or at the Warsaw Campus Center through June 11th. Contributions can also be made online at http://www.sunycap.org/programs-and-events/annual-conference/make-a-wish.... The Admissions Office is also accepting donations of items for a raffle to be held at the SUNYCAP Conference Fundraising Dinner.
Make-A-Wish grants wishes to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Sputore is excited to help the organization. “How wonderful would it be to help a child forget about their struggle and help make a dream come true.”
