Hundreds of GCC students will march into the Anthony T. Zambito Gymnasium THIS Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 1:00 pm to receive degrees and certificates during the forty-sixth annual commencement ceremony at Genesee Community College. The Batavia Brass Society will provide music for the event and Jordan Griffiths, a GCC Theatre Arts major who is participating in graduation, will sing “God Bless America.”
Two special presentations will be made this year. Norbert J. Fuest will be receiving the Alpha Medal of Service Award from the GCC Foundation, and John C. Dwyer will be presented with an Honorary Associate Degree.
GCC President Dr. James Sunser will introduce this year’s commencement speaker, New York State Senator George D. Maziarz who has served the 62nd District since 1995. Senator Maziarz’s many committee appointments include Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, as current chairman; the Senate Aging Committee; Senate Tourism, Recreation and Sport Development Committee; Senate Labor Committee; Environmental Conservation; Crime Victims, Crime and Correction; Transportation; Consumer Protection; Education; and Higher Education.
Following Senator Maziarz’s address, graduates will be presented and degrees conferred. Commencement will recognize more than 950 students including those completing programs of study in August 2013, January 2014, May 2014 and August 2014.
This year, GCC will be live-streaming the ceremony allowing parents and family members from around the globe to watch their graduates participate in the commencement ceremony. To view the event through the Internet go to: http://www.genesee.edu/commencementlive.
“With hundreds of students who fare from places far beyond Genesee County, we are delighted that we can now offer the opportunity to see and enjoy commencement from anywhere in the world where Internet service is available,” Cliff Scutella, director of Student Activities said. “Our international students are particularly excited that their parents, grandparents and siblings will be able to attend virtually.”
Commencement is open to the public, but the seating in the gymnasium is reserved for family and friends of graduates and requires a ticket for entry. The ceremony will also be video cast internally throughout the Batavia campus and can be viewed in the Stuart Steiner Theatre, room T102 of the Conable Technology Building and on every campus monitor including those in the Student Union and cafeteria. Tickets are not required to watch the ceremony in these areas.
Immediately following commencement, the college will host a reception with punch and light refreshments in the Forum for all graduates and guests.
