Cougars go for Regional Title this Weekend

The most successful men’s basketball season in the last ten years at Genesee Community College will continue this weekend into the Division II Region III final four hosted by top-seed Monroe Community College. The third-seeded Cougars will take on no. 2 Erie Community College on Saturday for a chance to play for the regional title on Sunday.
No. 19 nationally ranked Genesee, winners of 22 games so far this year and three in a row, will look to beat Erie for the first time in three tries this season.
The Kats earned the No. 2 seed with a 7-4 regular season Western New York Athletic Conference record and have won their last five meetings against GCC dating back to the 2011-12 season.
Last time out:
Genesee (22-7, 7-4) outlasted Jamestown Community College, the no. 6 seed, on Tuesday night in the sub-regional round, 104-96. Naquil Jones led GCC with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Ervin Mitchell added 24 points and eight boards, Jason Perry-Murray finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Alex Morris and Alastair Cole added 18 points apiece. The Cougars trailed for only two-minutes in the game and held a lead as large as 20 in the second half.
Erie (16-9, 7-4) earned a first-round bye as one of the top two seeds in the region. The Kats last played on Feb. 18 and defeated Niagara County Community College, 86-67.
What to watch for:
The last time GCC advanced past the regional semifinals was the 2002-03 season.
Kats leading scorer Fabian MacDonald (17.8 points per game) averaged 15.0 points in two contests against GCC this season.
ECC collected 108 out of 186 rebounds in the two games against Genesee this year (+30).

The winner will advance to Sunday afternoon’s Region III title game. No. 1 Monroe will play no. 5 Mercyhurst North East in the first semifinal matchup on Saturday with the winner moving on. Tip-off on Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
