The Genesee Community College men’s basketball team will host Jamestown Community College in the opening round of the Division II Region III playoffs on Tuesday night and the third-seeded Cougars will look to advance past the sixth-seeded Jayhawks to the semi-finals this weekend for the first time in two seasons.
Genesee (21-7, 6-4) has won six out of its last seven and will face the Jayhawks for the third time this season.
Jamestown (7-17, 0-10) has fallen in eight straight games and went winless in Western New York Athletic Conference play during the regular season.
Last time out:
The Cougars locked up the No. 3 seed with a win over #10 Monroe Community College on Feb. 20. Genesee trailed by as much as 13 in the second half but mounted a comeback and won on a pair of Alex Morris free-throws with 2.2 seconds left in the game. GCC’s 87-86 win was its 21st victory of the season. Morris scored a game-high 24 points and he also grabbed nine rebounds, Ervin Mitchell added 21 points and four assists and Alastair Cole chipped in 17 points.
Jamestown fell in its regular season finale on Saturday at home to Mercyhurst North East, 103-86. All five JCC starters scored in double figures, led by Ohndo Smith who scored 29 points on 12 of 15 shooting from the field. Tyreek Jewell added 18 points, Jerome Jackson finished with 16, Kasean Jackson ended the night with 12 and Jabar Williams chipped in 11.
What to watch for:
The Cougars have won both meetings against Jamestown this season.
GCC averaged 87.5 points in its two games against Jamestown this year and Ervin Mitchell and Naquil Jones combined to score an average of 51 of those points.
Tuesday night will feature two of the top 15 scorers in the country with GCC’s Ervin Mitchell (12th) and JCC’s Tyreek Jewell (7th).
Genesee has won three straight Region III opening-round games it has hosted (2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09).
The last time the Cougars advanced to the Region III Semifinals was in 2011-12 when they received a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed.
