Women's Basketball drops low-scoring Conference Opener

The Genesee Community College women's basketball team managed only five first half field goals in its Western New York Athletic Conference opener against Mercyhurst North East on Tuesday night and dropped a 46-36 decision to the visiting Lady Saints.

Despite the shooting woes, Genesee trailed by just six at the half. Macey McCulley cashed in two of GCC's five first half field goals and the Lady Cougars converted 7-17 free-throws to keep it close.

Heather Maloney hit an early second half three-point basket to draw GCC to within five at the 13-minute mark, but the shooting troubles continued as Genesee was just 6-22 from the field in the second half and 11-48 overall on the night.

Dashawna Jenifer scored a team-high nine points and grabbed 18 rebounds. Terra Clanton added six points, McCulley finished with five points, Shanell Glover collected eight rebounds and Maloney ended the night with seven points, including two threes.

Genesee falls to 5-10 on the season and 0-1 in WNYAC play. The Lady Cougars will return to action on the road on Thursday night at Niagara County Community College at 5:30 p.m.
