The Genesee Community College women's basketball team began the new year with an 80-40 victory over visiting Cayuga Community College on Saturday afternoon, marking the fourth victory in the last five games for the Lady Cougars.
The GCC defense held Cayuga to no field goals for the first 5:30 of the game, jumping out to an early lead.
After Cayuga drew to within nine, Genesee used a 16-1 run to end the first half and led 45-21 at the break.
GCC continued its run to start the second half, beginning the period on a 7-0 run and extending its lead.
Dashawna Jenifer led the way for GCC with 22 points and 13 rebounds, her seventh double-double of the season. Breana Gleaton added 15 points and 11 boards, Shanell Glover finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Hillary Rivera chipped in 12 points and Macey McCulley scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
Genesee held Cayuga to under 20% shooting from the field on the afternoon and the Lady Cougars were +23 in rebounding.
With the win, GCC improves to 5-7 on the season and will return to action on the road on Sunday at Niagara College (Canada).
