Background: Genesee Community College will salute veterans on Veteran’s Day, Monday, November 11, 2013. The College will recognize veterans among our students and staff, salute the flag, offer opportunities to send troops a note of support, and conduct a remembrance ceremony in the Peace Garden just outside the Conable Technology Building. All events are being coordinated by the staff development group GUSTO, Genesee Unites to Support Team Opportunities.
Throughout the day video screens all over the Batavia campus will present a wall of honor displaying photos of veterans who are connected to GCC either as students, staff, alumni or family members. In addition, The Adult Educational Opportunity Center (AEOC) will host a table of information providing support materials for veteran students. From 12 noon – 2 p.m. two laptop computers will be located in the lobby of the Conable Technology Building allowing people to send a secure email message to service men and women serving abroad.
At 12 noon, veteran and GCC graduate Ken Steinmetz will serve as master of ceremonies for a reception to honor veterans currently serving in the military. This will take place in the Peace Garden outside the Conable Technology Building. “This is an opportunity to honor our veterans and take a moment to let them know how much we appreciate all the sacrifices they make for our benefit,” said Marilyn Dickinson, program coordinator and GCC academic assistant. Veterans in attendance are asked to sign the Book of Honor and receive a patriotic ribbon.
Following the reception, visitors are invited to move to the Clock Tower where the Genesee County Joint Veterans Honor Guard will lead a Salute to the Flag. “We welcome the community to join us in recognizing our veterans and expressing appreciation for all they do,” Dickinson said.
