Background: Genesee Community College invites the community to share in the College’s latest expansion project. A groundbreaking reception is planned for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at College Village, 8170 Batavia-Stafford Townline Road.

The groundbreaking will initiate construction on two additional residence halls that will increase capacity by 64 students for a total of 453 students. “We hate having to turn away students who need housing,” said John Sisson, director of College Village. The Village received 572 applications for housing this fall but only had room for 389 students. “We’re really excited that we’ll be able to accommodate another sixty-four students in Fall 2014.”

The new buildings were designed by Clark Patterson Lee, the same firm that designed two residence buildings added to College Village in 2007. They will be built adjacent to the existing complex, on a 4.7 acre parcel first utilized for the 2007 expansion. The project is expected to cost approximately $2.8 million. Whitney East, from Scottsville, NY will serve as the general contractor.

The new buildings will total nearly 11,000 square feet and will be similar to those recently built with single bedrooms and two bathrooms, including a common space. “This space will be able to accommodate learning type classroom activity as well as social recreational uses,” said Sisson.

College Village currently consists of nine student residential buildings located on 11.7 acres. Residents live in garden-style apartments, and most apartments house four students. The Village is overseen by the Genesee Community College Foundation, which purchased the former College Meadows in August 2001. Since then the Foundation has consistently upgraded the property by improving energy efficiency, increasing technology capabilities for students, adding recreational opportunities and additional units to meet the growing demand for student housing.
