GCC Marketing Department Earns Awards

Department Also Engaging Users with New Website

Batavia, NY- Genesee Community College is pleased to recognize its Marketing Communications Department, which has earned three District 1 Medallion Awards from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR). NCMPR connects community college communications departments and annually lauds outstanding work through its Medallion Awards program. The winners will be honored at the District 1 Annual Conference October 20-22, 2013 in Mystic, CT.

GCC’s Marketing Communications Department, known as MarCom, earned awards in three categories. The first is for a series of brochures for the College’s highly regarded Fashion Business program. The gate-fold, four panel brochure highlights four areas of study, Fashion Merchandising Management, Fashion Design, Event Planning and E-Commerce. Three different covers were used, featuring a diverse array of students. “The three different photos really make the brochure stand out and can be used to optimize recruitment efforts in different areas,” said MarCom Associate Director Donna Rae Sutherland. “Designer Becky Green also did a great job utilizing type styles and other elements that would appeal to students interested in fashion careers.”

MarCom earned another award for its campaign marketing the Genesee Promise Plus program. The summer scholarship program expanded this year, giving adults who’ve never attended college the opportunity to take a class for free at GCC. MarCom developed a new Promise Plus logo and an ad campaign utilizing a gift box wrapped in the college colors and logo with the words “We have a gift for you.” Nearly 400 students enrolled for summer classes and the program engaged more than three dozen adult students who would not otherwise have pursued higher education.

The final award recognized Online Marketing Advertising with the Pandora Internet radio campaign developed by MarCom in Fall 2012. This campaign ran at two different Open House advertisements and a spring enrollment promotion. The 15-second spots included both an audio recording and on-screen graphics, and together the total campaign received more than 8,000 clicks and provided a new opportunity to reach college students. “It’s gratifying to receive an award for this effort because it was something we’d never tried before,” said Sutherland. “We were pleased with the results and even more so to know that others consider it exemplary.”

This is not the first time GCC Marketing Communications has been recognized by NCMPR. It’s received Medallion Awards in 2007, 2010 and 2011.

Batavia, NY – The Marketing Communications Office at GCC is making it easier to find the department online. It now has its own website located at: http://www.genesee.edu/offices/marcom.

The site includes a staff list and contact information, the college branding manual with details on how the college logo should be utilized, as well as downloadable versions of the logo. It also offers a link to the GCC Speakers Bureau. The Speakers Bureau provides a listing of faculty/staff experts at the college and topics about which they can speak to clubs and organizations.

“This is a site those outside the college can use to help them find the person or program they need here at GCC,” said Sutherland. “Those inside the college can find great information about how to work with us to promote their project or event.”
