Batavia, NY- Inspired by the creative challenges on the TV show Project Runway, Genesee Community College is partnering with Livingston Arts Council for Project Junkway, a new program that will raise scholarship funds for high school students. Under the theme “Into the Future”, teams will up-cycle “junk” into wearable items that will be modeled during a Fashion Show before a live audience. The event will take place at GCC’s Dansville Campus Center on Saturday, October 19, 2013. The winning team will receive the Junk Cup Trophy.
The competition is open to students (ages 12+, grades 7-12) and adults. Participants form teams of five to eight people, with one designated coach. Teams must register by October 1, 2013. Registration forms are available from Livingston Arts Council, (585) 243-6785 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Registration fee is $50 for student teams and $100 for non-student teams. All fees are tax deductible.
Doors open at 10 a.m. on October 19, 2013 at GCC Dansville, 31 Clara Barton St. (formerly Dansville Middle School). At 10:15 teams will have 15 minutes to choose materials from among those gathered and donated for the event. Teams are asked to bring their own tools and fasteners such as needle and thread, duct tape, rivets, tape measure, scissors and hot glue. Design making gets underway at 10:30. Teams have two hours to formulate and begin creating before a 30-minute lunch break at 12:30. Teams are asked to bring their own lunch. From 1 - 3 p.m. creations will be finalized and at 3:30 the Project Junkway Fashion Show begins before a live audience in the auditorium.
The community is invited to come out and watch the show and help choose the winning designs. Tickets to the fashion show are just $5. Additional donations will be gratefully accepted. One student team and one adult team will win the Junk Cup Trophy to display until next year’s event.
“We’re really excited to see how creative people can get with the items that we’re gathering,” said Heather Jones, GCC Fine Arts instructor who’s helping organize the event. “If people have things they’d like to donate we’re still collecting items such as tin foil, rope, pretty paper, ribbon, anything the designers might be able to use for their creation. We hope that groups can use this contest for learning, team building and giving back to the arts community. This should be a lot of fun!”
