Successful Business Owners to Share Lessons Learned

GCC BEST Center Program Goes ‘Beyond the Basics’ for Small Business Owners

Batavia, NY- Entrepreneurs and new business owners are often “big picture” thinkers ready to jump in to a new venture, and then discover the “devil is in the details.” The BEST (Business and Employee Skills Training) Center at Genesee Community College is offering a program to help entrepreneurs and small business owners tackle the key challenges to lead their business successfully. Working with The Batavia Development Corporation (BDC) and the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce, Small Business: Beyond the Basics will be offered on Wednesday evenings from 6 - 9 p.m., July 10-31, 2013.

Small Business: Beyond the Basics is designed for individuals about to prepare a business plan, as well as for entrepreneurs who have already launched their business within the past year or two. Participants learn about strategic planning, marketing, finance and human resource management. The program helps build confident leaders and managers through an honest and accurate self-assessment, and also understand the importance of critical small business skills such as decision making, effective communication, studying the competition and planning for continuous improvement. “The so-called soft skills, such as creating the right culture in your business, are often overlooked amidst the major elements of starting an enterprise,” said Reid Smalley, director of The BEST Center. “But these skills are essential to success and growth. Taking this course will fill in many gaps for small business owners and entrepreneurs.”

The program encourages participants to interact with and learn from a number of small business owners, many who’ve been recognized for their success by the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce. “We have many business owners willing to share what they’ve learned from mistakes they’ve made,” Lynn Freeman, president of the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce said. “This is a great opportunity for small business owners to avoid making similar mistakes and to network with successful colleagues who might be able to offer guidance on their journey.”

The class will include hands-on activities and tours of other businesses. In addition, a networking event is planned in August. Registration is going on now for Small Business: Beyond the Basics. The course runs from 6 -9 p.m. Wednesdays, July 10, 17, 24, and 31, 2013. The fee is $140. The class will meet in room T122 of the Conable Technology Building on the Batavia Campus of Genesee Community College, One College Rd., Batavia, NY 14020.

Small Business: Beyond the Basics is sponsored by GCC in cooperation with The BDC and The Chamber of Commerce. The course is recommended in conjunction with the Small Business Development Center or S.C.O.R.E. services and for owners applying for grant/ loan funding through the BDC or the Genesee County Chamber.
