GCC Career Services Offers Assistance Free of Charge

Batavia, NY- Are you in the market for a new job? Or maybe you’d like to explore a different career path? Genesee Community College Career Services is ready to help. Career Counselors at GCC provide assistance not only to GCC students and graduates, but to the community as well. Best of all, these services are always FREE.

From exploring career options to helping with interview preparation, the Career Services Center offers an array of assistance for people in all stages of professional development. “Many people may not know the resources that are available to them here at GCC,” said John McGowan, Career Development Specialist. “We invite them to stop by the Career Center to see how we can help them.”

Career counseling is an essential element of career planning. “Since career planning is ongoing, it’s important for students to utilize career services all through the college experience and beyond,” said McGowan. “Our mission is to provide assistance in learning the necessary planning, professional development, and job search skills in order to be successful in the decision-making process.” Even if you are not a student, career service coordinators can assist with career exploration, which can help you discover career options you may not have considered. Through this exploration you can learn more about your interests as well as research tips and strategies, and resources to help support you in a career decision.

Once you’ve made a decision, Career Services offers assistance with job search strategies. “Times have changed a lot when it comes to searching for a job,” said McGowan. “Social networking sites are playing an ever-increasing role in the job search.” Resumes are still essential, and GCC’s Career Services can help with resume development. They can also assist job seekers with writing cover letters and practicing for a job interview. “Mock interviews are great preparation for the real thing,” said McGowan.
