GCC Launches New Ad Campaign

Students Share Why College is ‘So Much More’

Batavia, NY- Genesee Community College has launched a new ad campaign showcasing dozens of GCC students. The campaign highlights a theme heard over and over again during interviews with them. “Time and again we heard the students say that GCC is so much more,” said John Riley of Metrix Marketing in Rochester. His company worked with the GCC Marketing Department to produce two 30-second television commercials and two 10-second advertisements. The spots started airing mid-May on Time Warner Cable and Rochester network affiliates.

GCC sophomore Sara Stabley, 19, stars in one of the 30-second ads. Stabley, a native of Silver Lake, NY graduated this spring from GCC with a degree in Theatre Arts. Stabley has enjoyed the small class sizes at GCC. “I matter as a student. I’m not a blurry face in a lecture hall,” she said. She hopes to continue her studies in New York City and feels well-prepared to do so. “I learned so much here,” she said.

The other 30-second ad features Brooklyn, NY native Nellis Dorlisme, 20, a general studies major in his first year at GCC. Dorlisme chose GCC for its affordability and distance from home. “I wanted to get away,” he said. A Resident Assistant at College Village, the student housing community adjacent to the Batavia campus, Dorlisme envisions a future in teaching or motivational speaking. He’s found inspiration at GCC, particularly from a favorite instructor, Thomas Priester. “He cares about his students and it shows,” Dorlisme said.

The commercials feature many other students in different campus settings, from the student union to the library, even the swimming pool. “We wanted to show off our students and our facilities to give audiences a real flavor of the wonderful learning community GCC offers,” said Marketing Communications Associate Director Donna Rae Sutherland. “We believe the ads do an excellent job of this.”

The spots were recorded over three days of shooting in March and April. Several students will also appear in billboards throughout the region, building upon the theme of the television ads, “GCC is so much more.” “Our college attracts a very diverse student body and many of our students hail from the GLOW region,” said Richard Ensman, Jr., Director of Development and External Affairs. “Our students come to GCC because we offer a vibrant community and academically rigorous programs. These ads reinforce the abundant opportunities we provide at affordable rates, making GCC an exceptional value.”

Founded in 1966, with alumni base of 24,000, Genesee Community College is part of the prestigious State University of New York (SUNY) system with its main campus in Batavia, and six additional campus centers in Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties. GCC offers associate degrees and certificates in more than 65 academic programs, provides extensive distance learning opportunities online, sponsors 15 intercollegiate athletic programs and more than 50 student clubs and organizations. Full time tuition is currently $3,550 per year.
