GCC Student Fashion Show Wows Crowd of 1,500

32nd Annual Event Highlights Student Creativity

Batavia, NY - You could hear a collective “ooh” when the wedding gown model raised a plume of brightly-colored peacock feathers behind her. Once again, students in Genesee Community College’s Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising programs outdid themselves with the 32nd Annual Fashion Show. This year’s theme, Fashion Forward, included a dozen unique scenes that ranged from the cute “Imminent Potential” to the edgy “Off With Their Heads” to the elegant “Eternal Inspiration.” More than 1,500 people turned out for two shows at 3 and 7 pm on April 27.

“We salute our students who each and every year go above and beyond to create a professional quality show,” said Professor Rick Dudkowski. “This year was certainly no exception. Every detail was attended to and the show was fantastic. This year for the first time students were able to include an exclusive clothing line along with their original designs.”

In keeping with the Fashion Business program’s mantra of “learning by doing” this year students were afforded the unique opportunity to utilize the spring trunk collection of original designer clothing from the Buffalo David Bitton showroom in New York City. Students had visited the designer’s showroom during their annual trip to New York City last fall.

Students transformed The Forum on the GCC Batavia Campus to accommodate a fashion runway. At least a dozen models appeared in each of the twelve scenes. This year the students decided to forego commentators, instead introducing each scene’s producers with a short video played on two screens at each side of the runway. “This gave them a chance to be even more creative,” said Dudkowski.

Following the show, students in GCC’s Tourism and Hospitality program hosted a reception in the cafeteria with punch and light refreshments. The Fashion Show encourages involvement from several academic disciplines, providing real world experience to more than just fashion students.
