Brandon Collins delivered a walk-off double in game one of Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader to send the Genesee Community College baseball team past Monroe Community College, 8-7. Monroe responded and took game two, 8-1.
The Cougars returned the favor after Monroe won in walk-off fashion in a 5-4 win at MCC on Thursday in the second game of a doubleheader, completing the two-game sweep of GCC and locking up the No.1 seed for the Region III playoffs.
The Tribunes began Saturday afternoon by scoring three times in the top of the first inning off of GCC starter Mark Knight, who struggled to find his command early. Knight hit two batters in the first frame but after giving up three runs, got a strike out and a groundball double play to escape without any further damage.
Shakeel Newton led off the bottom of the first with an infield single for GCC and scored on a groundout by Fauchedre Celestijn to get the Cougars to within 3-1.
Knight then walked three MCC batters to begin the second inning and the Tribunes capitalized with a run after a throwing error to take a 4-1 lead. Knight escaped further trouble again with a groundball double play, and settled down to allow the GCC offense to battle back.
Newton sparked a three-run third for GCC with a leadoff single and the Cougars sent all nine batters to the plate and tied the game at 4-4.
Knight pitched around a single and a walk in the fourth and retired the Tribunes in order in the fifth before Genesee took their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth. Sean Sutton was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a fielders choice to give GCC a 5-4 lead.
Monroe tied the game at five with a run in the sixth, but Newton again delivered a leadoff hit in the bottom of the inning and the Cougars scored twice to take a 7-5 lead into the seventh.
After relief pitcher Taheed Foy surrendered a leadoff double to begin the seventh, Brandon Collins was called on to protect the two-run lead. The GCC closer allowed three consecutive hits, however, and Monroe scored twice in the inning, tying the game, 7-7.
Collins delivered in the seventh with a two-out double that scored Newton, who reached on a fielders choice, from first base, giving the Cougars the walk-off win.
Newton finished game one 3-4 with four runs scored, Ranta scored two runs, Collins added a single, scored a run and got the win on the mound.
In game two, Monroe pitching allowed only one GCC hit through the first three innings and the Cougars only managed one run in the loss.
The Tribunes took the lead early with a pair of runs in the top of the first off of GCC starter Ryan DiMartino and added two more in the third, three in the sixth and one in the seventh to close out the win.
Genesee is now 19-10 overall on the season.
