The Genesee Community College baseball team went 3-1 this weekend in a pair of doubleheaders at home. The Cougars split with Mercyhurst North East on Saturday and took both games from Ithaca (JV) on Sunday.
Genesee fell in game one on Saturday to the Saints, 11-1. Shakeel Newton scored the only run of the game for GCC and picked up one of only two hits. Brandon Collins went 1-3 with a single.
In game two, GCC jumped out in front with a four-run first inning and went on to win, 10-5. Newton scored two runs, as did Zack Ranta, Sean Sutton and Fauchedre Celestijn. Jacob Kenney and Ramon Vega each scored a run and Jose Gonzalez went 1-3 with an RBI double and a stolen base.
On Sunday the Cougars offense again started early as the home team scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead against Ithaca JV. Newton led off the game with a single, stole second base and eventually came around to score on a Vega double that also plated Collins.
Mark Knight earned the win on the mound going five innings and striking out ten batters while giving up four runs. Collins came on to earn the save in a 7-4 GCC win.
Newton was 3-4 with a run scored, Quincy Costello went 2-3 with a run scored and Vega scored two runs and stole a base.
In game two, three GCC pitchers combined to shut Ithaca down. Alex Lyons did the bulk of the work, throwing five innings to earn the win. Taheed Foy and Eric Villalobos each pitched an inning to preserve a 6-0 win.
Collins was 2-4 with a triple and a run scored, Manny Garcia went 2-3 with two runs scored and Josh Maier went 2-3 with two runs scored.
After the weekend, the Cougars are now 16-7 overall and will travel to Finger Lakes Community College on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
