Genesee Community College Honors April Student of the Month

Genesee Community College is pleased to announce Dawn Roberto has been named the April 2013 Student of the Month.

Batavia, NY- Genesee Community College is pleased to announce Dawn Roberto has been named the April 2013 Student of the Month. A non-traditional student, Dawn grew up in Bucksport, Maine. Her husband Phillip’s Naval service took her to Virginia and Hawaii before returning to Maine. Four years ago her family relocated to Pembroke, NY.

Dawn is studying Tourism and Hospitality Management at GCC. She’d started studying architecture and horticulture at other institutions, but was never able to complete these degrees with her family’s relocation. With short trips abroad to Italy, Scotland, England and Hawaii; she always had an interest in the travel industry and when her sister, Theresa Rainey, decided to pursue the Tourism and Hospitality program at GCC, Dawn was spurred back to academia. “(Theresa) was sharing this information with me when I realized that is exactly what I want to be doing.” At 32, she decided “now would be a great time to get started or I may never get it done.” She and Theresa have enjoyed spending the last two years in classes together.

What made GCC all the more appealing to Dawn, is the childcare available for her two-year-old son, Noah. “This is the biggest reason I was able to attend GCC to complete my degree,” she said. Dawn also has an 11-year-old son Isaac and a nine-year-old daughter Makayla. She ultimately hopes to have a home-based travel agency that helps colleges promote study abroad opportunities and people pursue their travel dreams.

At GCC, Dawn is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, has been accepted into the 2013 “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges” and received a scholarship from Ontario Motor Coach Association (OMCA). The College is pleased to recognize Dawn’s outstanding work in the classroom and her willingness to take on challenges and leadership roles where most students would not, noting that she’s an excellent role model for others.

GCC has opened a world of opportunity to Dawn, and she has enjoyed the professors she has had in class. “I also enjoy the diversity of people whom I can interact with through classes, clubs, and other activities.

Dawn is the daughter of James Rainey and Julie Rainey-Johnson. Besides Theresa, she has two other siblings, Katie Mitten and Neal Rainey. She’s a 1998 graduate of Bucksport (ME) High School.
