GCC Joins Global Education Skills Alliance

Representatives from Australia, New Zealand coming to Batavia for Website Launch

Batavia, New York— Genesee Community College is expanding its efforts to fulfill a key element of its mission statement: providing educational experiences which promote global citizenship. The College is a founding member of the new Global Education Skills Alliance (GESA), a not-for-profit organization incorporated in the United States. On Monday, April 15, 2013 at 4:30 pm GCC will host the launch of the new GESA website. The event is open to the public and the media.

GESA is an international not-for-profit educational consortium with members in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, which aims to offer life-changing opportunities for college students, as well as employees of regional businesses. Eight institutions have partnered in GESA. They include:

•Cayuga Community College~ Auburn, NY
•Onondaga Community College~ Syracuse, NY
•Richard Bland College~ Petersburg, VA
•Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology~ Christchurch, New Zealand
•Holmesglen~ Holmesglen, Victoria, Australia
•Metropolitan South Institute of Tertiary and Further Education (TAFE)~ Mansfield, Queensland, Australia
•Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE ~Nambour, Queensland, Australia

GESA’s vision is to facilitate global education and training experiences through strategic alliances of member colleges and corporate sponsorships. These alliances allow a better understanding of world challenges and create study abroad connections, positive relationships, and authentic global learning exchanges. Participants will develop the ability to live and work effectively across international boundaries. GESA aims to make study abroad opportunities available to all those enrolled at a member schools. GCC president, Dr. James Sunser is a member of GESA’s Board of Directors.

Visitors from Australia and New Zealand will be at GCC for the April 15 launch event, including GESA President and CEO, Mark Harris, who is a former State University of New York (SUNY) Australian-American Fulbright Scholar. Other visitors from the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology in New Zealand include Lee McNicholl, Strategic Marketing Manager; Linda Reed, Communications and Events Manager, and John West, who oversees the Business Department.

Special activities recognizing the kickoff of this new alliance will be occurring throughout the month of April with the other U.S. based institutions.
