The Genesee Community College baseball team traveled to Scranton, PA on Sunday afternoon to take on the No.9 team in the country, Lackawanna College. Lackawanna entered the game 22-8 and played in last year’s national championships.
In game one, Shakeel Newton got the Cougars on the board with a lead off homerun. That was followed by another eight runs in the inning to give GCC a 9-0 lead. Brandon Stagg got the win on the mound, pitching three innings and only facing ten batters. Newton added a double and Brandon Collins went 2-2 with three RBI’s.
In game two, the Cougars fell short in a great college game, 12-11. Lackawanna took an early lead after the first, but Genesee came back and was leading 9-6 going into the sixth inning. Lackawanna then scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth after starting the inning off with a homerun. Genesee came back in the bottom of the inning scoring two, but with runners on second and third, could not complete the comeback.
“I felt much better today about the way we played. I hope our team continues to come out and play every game like they did today,” said Coach Sherman.
The team falls to 11-4 on the year and will travel to Monroe Community College on Tuesday afternoon.
