Cougars come up empty in Rhode Island

 The Genesee Community College men's basketball team opened up the weekend trip to Rhode Island with a 92-74 loss to Division I Monroe College of the Bronx on Saturday afternoon.

Joe Gray scored a game-high 25 points for GCC, who battled all afternoon despite trailing by 20 or more points in the first half and multiple times in the second half. They were able to cut it down to nine at the half, but could not inch much closer after Monroe began the second half on a 6-0 run.

E.J. Blackwell also reached double-figure scoring for the Cougars, finishing with 23 points and also dishing out seven assists. Terryl Coombs and Maurice Bailey each chipped in nine points.

On Sunday, GCC fell to MassBay Community College, 72-61.

E.J. Blackwell scored 20 points for the Cougars, Donte Meredith chipped in 13 points and Terryl Coombs added 11.

Genesee trailed by seven at the break and cut the MassBay lead down to three in the second half but could not get closer.

The loss is the third in a row and drops GCC to 9-8 on the year. The Cougars will get back into conference play on Tuesday night when they host Monroe Community College at 8pm.


The Genesee Community College women's basketball weekend was cut short after Avery Point was unable to take the floor on Sunday due to a shortage of players.
The Lady Cougars lost to the Community College of Rhode Island, 108-48 on Saturday. It was the second loss to the Lady Knights this season, dropping GCC to 1-11 on the year.
Genesee will return to conference play on Tuesday night when they host Monroe Community College.
