The Genesee Community College men's basketball team kicked off the new year by earning an overtime road win at Cayuga Community College on Friday afternoon, 90-86.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 16 point lead before the home team went on a run that eventually tied the game late in the first half.
Leading by two after the break, Genesee fell behind by as many as seven after Cayuga got hot from the floor. Donte Meredith had five three-point baskets in the second half and kept the Cougars in the game. GCC eventually tied the game and battled back-and-forth for most of the half. With the game tied and a chance at the last shot in regulation, the Cougars were unable to convert, sending the game into overtime
In the extra session, GCC fell behind on an early Cayuga basket before Meredith gave the Cougars the lead back on his sixth three-pointer of the contest. E.J. Blackwell also hit a key three-point basket in overtime and Genesee was able to hold on for the victory, their eighth of the season.
Meredith and Blackwell each finished with 23 points. Vaughn Boler added 17 points and Joe Gray chipped in 14 points. The Cougars improve to 8-5 on the season and will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Niagara College (Canada).
