Arcade, New York — Genesee Community College at Arcade is pleased to announce the Fall 2012 Student and Instructor of the Semester. Each semester, one student and one instructor are awarded the honor for their academic or teaching performance. Kay Kilburn of Arcade has been selected as the Instructor of the Semester and Jennifer Bognar of Holland has been selected as Student of the Semester.
Ms. Kilburn has taught various Human Services courses at the Arcade Campus for close to 10 years. She is also a social worker at the Pioneer Central District High School. She earned a Bachelor’s of Social Work at Buffalo State College, and subsequently earned a Master’s in the same subject from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Comments about her included: “I love her lectures. They always connect to what is going on in any given person’s life. She is a wonderful, talented person. It shows in her work how she truly cares for others and wants others to succeed. She is very dedicated to teaching the students and teaching them the things that they will need to know to do well in their chosen field.” Another student posted: “She expressed a genuine care in each student's success. She always brings a bright and positive attitude to our class room and she is extremely knowledgeable in her field. She is cheerful and kind.” A third student posted: “She goes above and beyond to understand and help her students. I didn't ever need to ask for her to "help," she knew what was needed and just went and did it.” She would like to thank all of her students for this distinction.
Ms. Bognar first benefitted from the Adult Promise Plus program this past summer. She is currently earning an Applied Associate’s degree in Accounting, and has achieved the Dean’s List last semester. Comments about her included: “Jennifer is an exceptional student and has been from the very first day,” and “She is generous with her time and knowledge and has maintained a cheerful and upbeat attitude.”
Student of the Semester is chosen through a nomination form by an instructor which includes a narrative as to why the student deserves the award. The forms are collected by the Campus Center staff and, in the case of more than one nomination, each of the five staff members (Arcade Campus Center associate dean, secretary and three associates) each cast one vote to select the award winner. The process for the Instructor of the Semester Award is the same, except that the teachers are nominated by their students.
The Arcade Campus Center is located at 25 Edward Street, Arcade. The spring 2013 semester starts Monday, January 14, 2013. For further information please call 585-492-5265.
