Albion and Medina, NY- The Albion and Medina Campus Centers of Genesee Community College are pleased to announce the Fall 2012 Students and Instructors of the Semester. Each semester, one student and one instructor at each campus center are awarded the honor for outstanding academic or teaching performance.
The Albion Campus Center is pleased to announce that Dan Culver has been awarded the Instructor of the Semester for the fall 2012 semester. Dan teaches Criminal Justice classes at the Albion Campus Center as well as at Bryant and Stratton College. He also teaches at the Police Academy in Monroe County. A retired lieutenant from the Orleans County Sherriff’s Department, Dan has an extensive background in the criminal justice field that he brings to the classroom. The students that nominated Dan for Instructor of the Semester appreciate that he is knowledgeable in his field and that he asks probing questions that challenges students to think deeply.
The Medina Campus Center is pleased to announce that Dr. Dave Schwert has been awarded the Instructor of the Semester for the fall 2012 semester. Dr. Schwert teaches Human Biology and Human Nutrition, and has taught Microbiology at the Batavia Campus Center. Dr. Schwert earned an M.S. in Microbiology from Carnegie Mellon University and a PhD in Biology from St. Bonaventure University. His teaching career has spanned four decades, including professorships at Houghton College and SUNY College of Technology at Alfred. Dr. Schwert’s students are surprised at how much they learn and how much fun they have in the process. One student said, “I never thought I would be naming off names of bones, veins, arteries, et cetera. His enthusiasm for biology makes even a dry topic fun and easy!”
The Albion Campus Center is pleased to announce that Leah Mead is the Student of the Semester for the fall 2012 semester. Leah is a Liberal Arts and Science major with a Humanities and Social Science concentration, and she is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. After GCC, Leah plans to transfer to The College at Brockport to major in Psychology. Her long term goal, however, is to earn her master’s degree or PhD. The instructors that nominated Leah describe her as the “model student.” She is an engaged learner, a high academic achiever and a positive contributor in the classroom. Leah’s strength as a student is that she loves to learn and is willing to do the work required of her.
The Medina Campus Center is pleased to announce that Rachel Diel is the Student of the Semester for the fall 2012 semester. She is currently taking classes in order to be accepted into the Nursing program. Despite facing many challenges, including raising a family and working, she made the life-changing decision a year ago, to go back to school. But as Rachel put it, “Something happens when you enroll in college. You have a renewed confidence; a pep in your step. You just feel good that you are doing something better for yourself and your life. I absolutely love this school and I am so glad I chose it. I am on my way to greater things!”
