The Genesee Community College men's lacrosse coaching staff recently announced their captains and schedule for the spring 2013 season. Awarded the honor of leading this year's team are sophomores Jonathan Gill (Gowanda), Jordan McElligott (Spencerport), Tom Owen (Clarence), and Christian Reiller (Salamanca). They will lead a team that has made back-to-back NJCAA Final Four appearances.
Jonathan Gill started all 19 games last year at attack for Genesee and was selected to the All-Region Second Team. He had 53 goals and 19 assists for 72 points, with a terrific 56% shooting percentage in his freshman campaign.
Jordan McElligott, a defenseman, played in all 19 games last season and was selected to the All-Region First Team. McElligott was fourth on the team with 18 takeaways and added 44 ground balls in 2012. This year he will be looked upon to lead the young defensive unit and matchup with the opposing team's best attackman.
Tom Owen is a returning captain, who again will be an important two-way midfielder. He brings a tremendous amount of leadership and experience to the team. Tom had five goals and five assists for ten points last year.
Christian Reiller, an attackman, returns to Genesee after taking a year off. He was selected to the All-Region First Team in 2011 when he had 33 goals and 14 assists as a midfielder. The Cougars will look to Reiller to help fill the void left by GCC's top two all-time leading scorers, Connor Latimer and Gaehnew Printup, who graduated last year.
Genesee is a member of the Western New York Athletic Conference and Region III NJCAA. This year's schedule is highlighted with home games against Onondaga Community College, CCBC-Essex and Suffolk Community College. Genesee will also travel to Albany and Long Island over their spring break to play Hudson Valley Community College and Nassau Community College. Other notable games on the schedule include Monroe CC, Broome CC, Herkimer CCC, Mercyhurst North East and SUNY Delhi (which will be played at Cortland State). The Cougars will play all of their home games on their new state of the art lighted turf field.
