Batavia, NY- Genesee Community College is pleased to announce Derek Maxfield has been named December Employee of the Month for 2012. Derek is an instructor of history at the College, teaching history courses in all subject areas. He is also the College’s historian-in-residence and coordinates the various events and opportunities for GCC’s ongoing Civil War Initiative.
Derek has been with Genesee for four years. Previously, he was an associate professor of History and Political Science at Capital Community College in Hartford, CT. His first career was in the communications field as a radio announcer and journalist, which he began with his first job at the age of fifteen.
“My favorite aspect of working at GCC is the people. I learned quickly, that is the reason the College is one of the Great Colleges to Work For,” Maxfield said, referring to the designation by Chronicle of Higher Education. Maxfield earned a Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cortland, a Master’s degree from Villanova University, and an ABD degree from the University at Buffalo.
He currently resides in Dundee, NY with his wife Christine, daughter Quincy (11) and son Jesse (9). When asked about his hobbies, Maxfield replied, aptly and simply, “History is my life.”
Genesee Community College is also pleased to announce Samantha Vogt has been named the December Student of the Month for 2012. Samantha is a Fashion Merchandising Management major at GCC. A West Seneca East High School graduate, Samantha chose GCC after a short stint at Canisius College. Her dedication and enthusiasm is recognized through her role as the student representative to GCC’s Board of Trustees.
“I vigorously searched for a school with a fashion merchandising program and discovered Genesee Community College,” Samantha said. “It was affordable, had the perfect program and allowed me to stay on campus as a resident assistant [at College Village]. I was ecstatic! It was a perfect match.”
Currently working at M.A. Carr Bridal, Samantha hopes to move to New York City and work with a clientele base in the fashion industry where she can wake up every morning and enjoy going to work.
“My professor, Mr. Rick Dudkowski, has had the most influence in my personal growth and development. Everything from his coursework, to his connections in the industry, has impacted me tremendously,” Samantha said.
Samantha has served as project manager for a few campus activities including co-producing the annual GCC Fashion Show, which is scheduled on April 27, 2013. She is also currently a GCC student blogger which can be appreciated at http://gcccampusblog.wordpress.com/.
Samantha, age 20, is the daughter of Jill and Steve Kowalczewski, and the older sister to Ben and Andrew. She is a West Seneca, NY native and is gaining a lot from her experience at GCC.
