The GCC men's soccer team took their season record to 9-1 with a tough win over Mercyhurst NE on Thursday night.
The Cougars had the majority of the play but the very rough surface did not allow for flowing soccer. The first half was a scoreless affair, but then second half came to life quickly. The Cougars took the lead on a Dom Francis penalty kick eight minutes into the second half. Not long after, Mercyhurst tied the game when they poked the ball home following a goalmouth scramble.
Mercyhurst took the lead ten minutes later to leave the Cougars trailing for only the second time in a game this season. However with 12 minutes remaining in regulation, Lee Micklethwaite put an overhead volley into the top corner off of a Dom Francis assist.
After 90 minutes the teams were tied 2-2 and would still be tied after the first 10 minute overtime period. In was not until there were just 49 seconds remaining that Cody Niccloy headed home a Lee Micklethwaites corner for his first career goal and secured the 3-2 win for GCC.
The Cougars will host North Country Community College for their next contest on Saturday afternoon at 4pm.
