The Genesee Community College men's soccer team started the 2012 season on a winning note, downing visiting Broome Community College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars overcame a scrappy start and got into a comfortable rhythm which allowed them to dominate possession. GCC spurned a number of chances in front of the goal with Theo Stamatopolous and Nathan Rose going close. Genesee took the lead midway through the first half when Sam Cassidy calmly slotted Theo Stamatopolous' pass past the Broom goalkeeper.
In the second half, the Cougars came out strong and asserted their dominance in terms of possession. Genesee finally got their much deserved second goal midway through the second half when Lee Micklethwaite curled Sam Cassidy's assist into the top right corner to make it 2-0. Dom Francis put the game out of reach after he was brought down in the box and scored on his own penalty kick. Broome got a consolation goal late in the game for a final score of 3-1.
The Cougars are now 1-0 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday when they host Monroe Community College for a 4pm start.
