Batavia, New York—Twenty-six students from across Western New York were the finalists for Outstanding Scholar Awards in Genesee Community College’s Advanced Studies program. The awardees were honored at a ceremony and reception Wednesday, May 31, 2012 in the Stuart Steiner Theatre at Genesee’s Batavia campus.

Loren Penman, a retired local educator whose career spanned more than 35 years with teaching and administrative positions in Batavia, Elba, Gates Chili, Oakfield-Alabama, Webster, West Irondequoit and Byron-Bergen gave an inspiring keynote address. As she donned the classic graduation mortarboard, she told her audience of successful students that a college diploma and their graduation caps were the best hats they will ever wear to weather any storms they face in their futures.

Advanced Studies is part of the College’s ACE program, or Accelerated College Enrollment, and allows high school students the opportunity to earn college credit from Genesee while attending class within their high school. High school teachers approved as Genesee adjunct faculty teach all Advanced Studies courses. Some of the most enterprising young students earn enough transferable Advanced Studies credit to enter their first year of college as sophomores.

“We are always pleased to welcome the Advanced Studies students and their families to the main campus to celebrate their hard work and success,” Ed Levinstein, associate dean of the ACE Program said. “We hope students will go to our Facebook next week to see their Faces of ACE and share their success stories and future plans.”

The 26 finalists were selected from more than 100 nominations in the five subject areas of mathematics, science, social science, foreign language and English. As in years past, a committee of academic professionals from Genesee Community College selected the following award winners, listed by county within their subject areas:
