ACE Program of Genesee Community College Announces New Summer Math Enrichment Opportunity

‘Middle School Math Survivors’ Work Online ‘Taming Wild Algebras'

Batavia, New York—Middle school students throughout the GLOW region (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming Counties) will have a unique opportunity for expanding their math skills this summer. GCC’s Accelerated Enrollment Programs (ACE) will be offering an innovative online math enrichment program to all students in grades six through eight. “Middle School Math Survivor” students will complete six weekly online challenges incorporating a new pre-algebra or algebra level concept and will earn fun prizes throughout the summer.

Many high schools throughout the GLOW region offer college level math courses where students can receive Genesee Community College credit for their coursework. The “Middle School Math Survivor” program has been designed to supplement the traditional middle school math curriculum with the college algebra curriculum in mind. Middle school students at all ability levels can benefit from the real-life application of the “Math Survival Guide Workbook” and will be encouraged to succeed through the online “Survival Guides” who will answer questions and offer suggestions for easy ‘taming’ of even the most ‘wild’ of algebra problems.

The program can accommodate 100 students and registrations will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. A technical orientation will be held at GCC on Monday, July 2 before commencing the six-week online program which culminates on Friday, August 17 with an on-location math competition at the Buffalo Zoo at 300 Parkside Avenue in Buffalo.

“This new program offers an innovative opportunity for students to enjoy a fun-filled, stress-free environment to explore Algebra concepts from their own home or even while they are on vacation if they have access to a computer and the Internet,” Karlyn Finucane, ACE Program specialist said. “Whether they love math or are leery of the subject, this is the perfect opportunity to keep the head gears working over summer vacation!”

Additional information can be obtained from middle school math teachers and guidance counselors at all GLOW region school districts or by contacting the ACE Programs office at Genesee Community College by phone: 585-343-0055 ext. 6320 or email:
