The Genesee Community College baseball team earned a double-header sweep over visiting #8 Mercyhurst North East on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Saints 3-2 and 5-2.
In game one, starting pitcher Dan Sharpe set the tone throwing a complete game allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out three.
The Cougars took an early lead with a run in the first and then added two in the fourth.
Fauchedre Celestijn went 1-2 with an RBI, Jean Rodriguez added two hits and a run batted in and Brandon Collins finished the game 2-3.
In game two, Genesee trailed early after Mercyhurst broke through with two runs in the top of the first inning. After being retired in order in the first and the second innings, the Cougar offense responded to tie the game in the third inning. Rafael Lozada connected on a solo homerun to draw GCC back within one and then Collins delivered an RBI double that drove in Emmanuel Garcia who was hit by a pitch.
The Cougars took the lead for good in the sixth inning with three runs on two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch. Shakeel Newton delivered the big blow, plating two with a double.
Starting pitcher Adam Pratt threw 5+ innings and allowed just the two first inning runs. Collins earned the victory, throwing two scoreless innings which included an escape of two runners on and no outs, which he inherited from Pratt.
Newton finished the game 2-4, Lozada was 1-2 with two runs scored and Collins was 1-3.
Genesee improves to 17-9 overall and will travel to Ithaca College (JV) tomorrow at 1pm.
