The Genesee Community College men’s baseball team kicked off their spring trip with their first game in five months against Potomac State College (WV) on Friday afternoon, in the first of a nine-game road schedule down south.
After taking a 1-0 lead early on a Bryan Depew (Wellsville, NY) double, the Cougars gave up five runs in the home-half of the first inning to the Division I Catamounts and trailed 5-1.
A second inning Manny Garcia (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) homerun got Genesee back to within a run at 5-4, before Potomac scored three unanswered runs to extend their lead to four, at 8-4.
Trailing 8-6 in the sixth inning, Genesee committed four errors in the field and the Catamounts’ lead grew to 15-6. Potomac State would add one more run and won the game 16-6.
Shakeel Newton (Christiansted, Virgin Islands) led the Cougars going 2-2 at the plate. Genesee threw a total of seven pitchers in the game.
Genesee will play Jamestown Community College at 4pm on Saturday, followed by a game against Salem Community College in Richmond, VA.
