Batavia, New York — The Rosalie “Roz” Steiner Art Gallery, inside the Genesee Center for the Arts, is pleased to welcome an exhibit by Joseph Whalen. The exhibit will run November 10, 2011 through January 6, 2012. An opening reception for the exhibit will take place on Thursday, November 17 at 1:00 p.m. in the gallery. An “Artist in Attendance” celebration will take place on Saturday, November 19 from 12:00 pm- 4:00 pm in the gallery. The exhibit and opening receptions are free and open to the public.
This exhibit includes 50 watercolor and acrylic paintings by Lockport native Joseph Whalen. From landscapes to pool halls, Whalen creates visual narratives in a style that recalls early 20th century realism.
Whalen, who works mostly in watercolor and acrylic, was born in Lockport in 1927. He is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, the Albright Art School and Buffalo State College. A forty-five year member of the Buffalo Society of Artists, Whalen is also a founding member of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society.
Whalen's paintings have won many awards (including the prestigious Gold Medal of the Buffalo Society of Artists) and have been exhibited in numerous venues including the Burchfield - Penny Art Center and the Albright Knox Art Gallery. His greatest impact on the local art scene, however, has undoubtedly been his 35 years he spent as an art teacher in the local school systems.
The Roz Steiner Art Gallery is open Monday – Friday, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Visit the gallery website at http://www.genesee.edu/gallery/ for special event and holiday hours.
