The Genesee Community College Men's Baseball team won their opening round game of the Western New York Athletic Conference tournament against Jamestown Community College on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars defeated the Jayhawks 6-1.
Adam Pratt (Batavia, NY) got the start for GCC and threw five and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out seven. Pratt did not allow a hit until the sixth inning en-route to earning the victory.
The Cougars jumped out to a lead in the third inning when Zach Ranta (Stoney Creek, Ontario) delivered a two-out, bases clearing double to put GCC up 3-0. The Cougars added to their lead in the fourth inning when Bryan Depew (Wellsville, NY) and Brandon Collins (Toronto, Ontario) each delivered RBI singles, giving GCC a 5-0 lead. Collins answered a Jamestown run in the sixth inning with another RBI single, and finished the day 3 for 3 with 2 runs batted in.
The Cougars bullpen combined to throw 3 1/3 shutout innings and did not allow a hit. Dan Sharpe (Youngstown, NY), Sean Stanley (Holley, NY) and Dan Harms (Hamburg, Germany) all pitched in relief for GCC.
The Cougars (11-2) will host the final three games of the WNYAC tournament on Saturday afternoon at Dwyer Stadium. The first game of the day will be at 11am, with the second game starting at 2pm followed by the championship game at 5pm. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
