BACKGROUND:

While continuing its commitment to educate students and the surrounding communities, Genesee Community College’s Lima Campus Center will host the Civil War lecture “Upton: Days of Challenge, 1861-1881.” This program focuses on General Emory Upton's military career and his attempts at reforming the U.S. military and its policies. Upton was an outstanding leader of men, a brilliant tactician, and dedicated reformer. Several of his ideas to improve the U.S. military are still in effect today. This lecture will be presented by Don Burkel.

This lecture starts the Lima Campus Center’s Civil War Initiative (CWI), a multi-year program for community members to learn about and commemorate the rich history of the American Civil War. The CWI will provide several opportunities throughout the year to discover the history of the Civil War through lectures, movies and other activities that will lead up to a Civil War reenactment. Led by GCC instructor of History, Derek Maxfield, the CWI is a great opportunity for community members to find out more about the dynamic history of the Civil War.
