The Genesee Community College Men's Soccer team avenged last year's playoff loss to Erie Community College, with a 3-0 victory on Thursday night.
It was a scoreless game nearly twenty minutes into the first half when Brandon Reiner (Attica, NY) scored off of a nice cross from Dom Francis (Huddersfield, England). The Cougars played strong defensively, holding the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Cougar defense stayed strong. Declan Brennan (Dublin, Ireland) won a number of jump balls in the box to help goalkeeper Jack West (Notts, England) keep ECC off the scoreboard. GCC extended their lead in the 27th minute when Theo Stamatopolous (Norwich, England) sent a ball over the top that Jonny Bonner connected on with his left foot, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead. GCC would seal the victory in the 39th minute when Sean Brettel (Welwyn Garden City, England) scored off of another nice cross from Dom Francis.
The Cougars improve their season record to 2-0-1. Goalkeeper Jack West now has two shutouts on the season. GCC will travel to Onondaga Community College on Saturday, September 10, for their next match at 3pm.
