Batavia, New York— The Genesee Community College chapter of Toastmasters International, the GCC Multi-Cultural Communications Club, will host its first general meeting of the 2011-2012 year on Tuesday, September 13 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Batavia Campus. As a community club, it is open not only to students, staff and faculty, but also to anyone from the greater Western New York area interested in networking and participating in activities, exploring the area of public speaking and having fun in the world of communication. Participants are encouraged to come to the meeting early for networking opportunities from 4:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. in room T119.
Participants will learn how to give impromptu speeches, present prepared speeches and to improve communication skills in a supportive environment. Toastmasters helps remove the fear of public speaking and teaches the skills that help members be more successful in whatever life path they select. The Toastmasters format works in tandem with GCC’s public speaking course.
Club meetings are workshops where attendees study and practice communication and leadership skills with others who are there for the same reasons. Research indicates that club members learn by doing and by watching. During club meetings, members build “quick thinking” skills, learn how to introduce speakers, conduct meetings and perform other roles that will give plenty of practice in a variety of communication experiences.
Officers for the 2011-2012 year include Elizabeth Downie, president; Keith Ward vice president of Education; Michelle McDonald, vice president of Public Relations, James Lachman, vice president of Membership; Eric Rada, secretary; Robert Penepent, treasurer; Robert Rono, Sargeant of Arms; Sean Hale, membership committee; Komal Dattani, membership committee and JunYung Park, membership committee.
GCC invites all community members to mark on their calendars and consider bringing along a friend to any of the 2011 general meetings on September 27, October 11, October 25, November 15, November 29 and December 13.
