The Genesee Community College Men's Baseball team won both games of a Labor Day double header against Monroe Community College on Monday afternoon.
In game one, starting pitcher Dan Sharpe was in complete control, throwing a complete game shutout allowing just one hit in a 4-0 Cougars win. Outfielder Shakeel Newton led off the game with a double. He then stole third base and scored the games first run on a wild throw. Newton then added an RBI single in the 5th, and also stole his second base of the game. Outfielder Feuchedre Celestijn went 1-3, driving in the Cougars third run of the game, with an RBI single in the 5th inning. The Cougars added their fourth run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jean Rodriguez scored from third on a rundown that resulted from a delayed steal by Tyler Koronas between first and second.
In game two, it was the pitching once again that carried the Cougars. Adam Pratt (Batavia, NY) was dominant, throwing 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits and striking out nine. The Cougars only run of the game came in the fourth inning when Jean Rodriguez drove in Brian Nieves with an RBI triple. Shakeel Newton, Sean Alexander and Tyler Koronas also had hits for the Cougars.
Pitcher Dan Harms came in to close the door, striking out one and inducing a game ending ground ball in the top of the seventh inning, to earn the save and preserve the win for Adam Pratt and GCC.
The Cougars (4-3) will travel to Finger Lakes Community College for their next game on September 10th, at 1pm.
