The Genesee Community College Women’s Volleyball team opened their season this past weekend, competing in the Columbus State Community College Tournament in Columbus, Ohio.
The Lady Cougars competed in five games during the two day tournament, which ran from Friday, August 26th to Saturday, August 27th.
The Lady Cougars opened the tournament facing Owens Community College (OH), falling in three games, 13-25, 7-25, 10-25. The Lady Express from OCC are currently ranked #9 in the country, and will host their own tournament September 2nd through the 4th, which the Lady Cougars will attend.
GCC played their second match of the opening day against Macomb Community College (MI), losing in three games, 18-25, 13-25, 18-25.
“The first day didn’t go so well, but after an evening dinner and some reflection, we entered the gym much more purposeful on Saturday to face the host of the tournament,” said head coach Jim Mercer. “Our performance improved, but unfortunately we couldn’t get a win,” Mercer said. The Cougars fell to Columbus State Community College in three games, 17-25, 15-25, 15-25.
In their third game of the tournament, the Lady Cougars gave their best performance, losing to Edison State Community College (OH), 24-26, 25-23, 18-25, 22-25.
“We were much more competitive,” said Mercer.
The Lady Cougars ended the tournament in their final match against a very impressive Oakland Community College team, losing three games, 10-25, 6-25, 19-25.
Of the overall tournament performance, Coach Mercer added, “We will look to build off of this. We will go to Owens Community College this weekend and we will look to compete.”
Owens Community College will be the site of this year’s National Championships, a place the Lady Cougars hope to travel to again. GCC will play its first game on Friday, September 2nd at 3pm.
