Medina, NY- The Medina Campus Center of Genesee Community College is proud to announce the spring 2011 Student and Instructor of the Semester. Luann Tierney has been named the Instructor of the Semester and James Giarla has been named Student of the Semester.

In addition to teaching Introduction to Healthful Living, Body Conditioning and Bowling for the College, LuAnn Tierney tutors students in Math and Science. LuAnn’s energetic and eclectic approach to teaching derives from her 30-plus years of teaching in the Royhart School District and her decades of coaching varsity sports. Her passion for helping students is consistently noted in informal comments from students and staff as well as formal critiques. As one student put it, LuAnn “…teaches us to think – to evaluate ourselves and our health and wellness choices, and then she presents alternative solutions. She is very open to student suggestions and needs and will give whatever extra time she has to help you succeed. Her insight is amazing – part of being educated is learning about the world you live in and being able to stand up and challenge things around you to change just as much as seeing a need to make a change in yourself. LuAnn has made me realize that.”

James Giarla is one of Genesee’s non-traditional students who is currently enrolled in a Liberal Arts and Science degree with a concentration in the Teachers Education Transfer Program. James made the President’s List for the spring 2011 semester and he is expected to graduate in May 2013. He is very helpful around the Medina campus and has made his presence known; he is usually found in the Student Resource Room working on papers or other assignments, or elsewhere on campus assisting other students. As one of his instructors put it, “He is an excellent non-traditional student who always gives 110 percent. He has improved significantly since day one and is generally anxious to learn and grow.”
