The #3 seeded Men’s Lacrosse team defeated #2 seed Monroe CC 11-5 Saturday, advancing to the championship game of the 2011 Region III Tournament. The Cougars will face-off against #1 seed Onondaga CC at 1:30pm Sunday May 8, 2011 at Herkimer CCC for the title.
Following a 13-9 loss to Monroe back on April 28; the Cougars knew they would have to change their game plan if they were to advance Saturday. They accomplished this through a new defensive game plan that according to Associate Head Coach Derek Hoover “completely stunned their offense... the whole defense ran our game plan perfect.”
Evidence of this was the score at halftime which had the Cougars leading 6-1. Leading the way on defense was sophomore long-stick-middie Zach Smith (Rochester, NY) who caused five turnovers; while freshman goalie Zack Wilson (Lewis Center, OH) recorded 13 saves in the game.
Offensively, the Cougars firepower was led by the freshmen attack duo of Gaehnew Printup (Tuscarora, NY) and Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON); Printup had three goals and three assists, while Latimer had two goals and two assists. Freshman midfielder Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY) also had three goals on the day. Additionally, sophomore attack Erik Huk (North Tonawanda, NY) netted two goals and freshman midfielder Chip Chapman (Batavia, NY) chipped in a goal.
The Cougars turn their attention now to the defending national champions Onondaga CC, who Genesee faced in their first game of the season back on March 4, 2011; a game that was played in the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University. Following the 24-7 loss, Genesee went on to win its next 12 straight games.
