Tom Rivers, local author of acclaimed book, Farm Hands will present at Genesee Community College on Tuesday, April 12 at 12:30 pm. Sponsored by Genesee’s Global Educational Committee, Tom Rivers will speak about his book and will be available for book signings. This event will take place in T102 at the Batavia Campus and is free and open to the public.

As a Batavia Daily News newspaper reporter, Tom Rivers wrote a first-person series about farm work in 2008 that won state and national awards. Now the series, with more background and additional information, has been compiled in this newly released, 168-page book, Farm Hands: Hard work and hard lessons from Western New York fields. Rivers covers agriculture news stories for The Daily News. After receiving positive feedback about the newspaper series he had been writing, many readers and farmers encouraged him to compile the stories into book form. Several farmers have told Rivers they hope the book will gain a wide audience, helping to educate Americans on the challenges of producing food and the grueling work needed to harvest fruits and vegetables. “Mr. Rivers has done a superb job of highlighting a topic that affects so many local community members,” Karin Kovach-Allen, dean of Human Communications and Behavior at Genesee said. “His book and experiences weave an interesting story and as a successful writer and author he serves as an inspiration to our students.”
