Arcade, NY- Genesee Community College’s Arcade Campus Center is pleased to announce the fall 2010 Student and Instructor of the Semester. Each semester, one student and one instructor are awarded the honor for their academic or teaching performance. Becky L. Benchik-Watson was selected as Instructor of the Semester and Donald C. LeFort was selected as Student of the Semester. Both Becky and Donald are from Arcade, NY.
Becky teaches various Mathematics classes at the Arcade Campus Center; in addition, she has also taught for the Reaching Educational Achievement Program (REAP), a special educational opportunity for returning adult learners. Student comments in the nomination process included:
“She is such a great math teacher!”
“I am horrible at math and I have done great in her class!”
“She really cares about her job.”
Donald is known for having high quality work, consistently making insightful comments in class, and being quick to help other others. He has overcome several personal obstacles in the past and has impressed his instructors. Instructor comments included: “He truly makes connections between and among ideas and is interested and knowledgeable about a wide variety of subjects.” The fall 2010 semester was Donald’s last semester at GCC; he transferred to the University at Buffalo in January 2011.
“Don is a student who we're delighted to see go on to UB,” Deborah DiNoto, dean of the Arcade Campus Center said. “His dedication and enthusiasm will serve him well as he continues his education. He is a great role model for other students.”
Student of the Semester is chosen through a nomination form by an instructor which includes a narrative as to why the student deserves the award. The forms are collected by the Campus Center staff and, in the case of more than one nomination, each of the five staff members (Campus Center dean, secretary and three associates) cast one vote to select the award winner. The process for the Instructor of the Semester Award is the same, except that the teachers are nominated by their students.
