The Genesee Women’s Basketball team got strong performances from sophomores Krystie Laurey (Horseheads, NY) and Shakatta Brown (Rochester, NY) as they took on rival Monroe Community College at home but the Cougars fell short by a score of 76-65. The loss ended a two game winning streak that the Lady Cougars had established over the past week.
The game saw the women take a first half lead as they led 41-38 at half-time. The second half saw the teams go tick-for-tat until Monroe was able to pull away by relying on strong defense. The strong play of their defense allowed Monroe to outscore Genesee by 14 points in the second half to take the win.
On the game Laurey and Brown led the Cougars with 22 and 14 points respectfully. Laurey also led the women in nine total rebounds. Freshman Kayla Golden (Lackawanna, NY) helped coordinate Genesee’s offense with five assists.
The Lady Cougars will return to action this Saturday (January 29) as they travel to take on another Western New York rival Erie CC at 2 pm.
