Albion, NY- After fifteen years of service at Genesee Community College, Allen Kidder will retire as associate dean of the Albion Campus effective February 4, 2011. A reception to honor and celebrate Allen will take place on Wednesday, February 2 from 3:00pm – 6:00pm at the Albion Campus Center located at 456 West Avenue.
Allen joined Genesee Community College as the director of Grant Services in January 1996 and served in that position for four years. During that period he was successful in securing revenues of $1.7M from grants per year, and in 1999 submitted grants resulting in $3.85M in awards. Allen also served as the acting dean of the Warsaw Campus Center. Allen began his tenure as the associate dean for the Albion Campus since August 2000, contributing to a 47% increase in enrollment over 10 years. He helped to add six ‘Smart’ classrooms to the Albion Campus by obtaining special legislative grants from Senator Maziarz and Assemblyman Nesbitt. He also helped establish the College Today program for local high school seniors, and strengthened relationships within the community.
He has served on many councils and committees in and outside of the College, including the Campus Safety Task Force, Equity Committee, Orleans County Chamber of Commerce Marketing and Tourism Committee, Liberty Partnership Program Advisory Council, Orleans Business Association, Medina Memorial Hospital’s Women’s Health Initiative, Even Start Advisory Board, and Genesee County Job Development’s GLOW Technology Committee.
Allen was awarded GCC Employee of the Month in December 2003, and again together with his staff in January 2008. He received the Friend of Education Award from Albion Central School in 2003. He was also the recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service in 2007.
His friendly and professional style is evident every day at the Albion Campus. His overall guidance is broad and simple, “Number one, find new ways to attract new students and expand our enrollment, and two, provide excellent customer service to attract and retain students and faculty.” Mr. Kidder noted, “I have really enjoyed helping students solve their problems and assisting them to overcome the road blocks to their education so they can move on in their professional lives.”
Before coming to GCC, Allen spent 30 years in aerospace in Buffalo at the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory (owned by Cornell University) which later became the Calspan Corporation, a research and development corporation. While at Cornell and Calspan, he was the principal economist and later the assistant to the general manager. Before joining Cornell, Allen received his Bachelor’s in Industrial Economics from Purdue University and his Master’s in Economics from Indiana University. A resident of Akron, NY, Allen served on the Village Planning Board and on the Board of Directors for the Main Street Revitalization Committee. He is a commercial pilot with multi-engine, instrument, flight instructor, and instrument instructor ratings.
The students, staff, and faculty at Genesee’s Albion Campus thank Mr. Kidder for his hard work and sincere dedication to the local community. He will be truly missed.
