The men’s and women’s swim teams each took third place at the Erie CC 2nd Annual Long Course Invitational. The event provided the only opportunity for the teams to compete in the 50-meter venue (all other meets are competed in 25-yard format). The change provided a nice change of pace to end the fall semester on. Genesee’s women took third with 186 points with Herkimer CCC taking top honors with 378 points. On the men’s side Erie won with 369 points and Genesee took third with 282 points.
Top finishes for the women included sophomore Alysha Phillips (Attica, NY) taking second in the 200-meter freestyle, and fourth in the 100m backstroke. Freshman Kristina Kasper (Albion, NY) was Genesee’s top sprinter taking seventh in the 50m freestyle and fourth in the 100m freestyle; finishing close behind Kasper was sophomore Dani Hoskins (Batavia, NY) (10th and 8th respectfully) and freshman Amber Shults (Brockport, NY) (11th and 9th). While freshman Emily Mott rounded things out for the women individually with a second place finish in the 100m butterfly and fourth place finish in the 200m freestyle. Phillips, Kasper, Hoskins, and Mott teamed up for a fourth place finish in the 200m medley relay and a third place finish in the 400m freestyle relay.
Freshman Yoshi Kuribayashi (Yokohama-City, Japan) led the men with two first place finishes in the 200m individual medley (2:42.68) and the 100m breaststroke (1:22.77), and a second place finish in the 100m backstroke. Sophomore Brad Blair (Attica, NY) led the distance events with second and third place finishes in the 800m and 400m freestyle events, Blair also nabbed a second place finish in the 100m freestyle. Blair teamed up with fellow sophomore Justin Perry (Batavia, NY) and freshmen Rob Harder (Letchworth, NY) and Max Brady (Akron, NY) for a third place finish in the 200m medley relay. While Brady, sophomore Josh Kelkenberg (Oakfield, NY), Harder, and Kuribayashi took third also in the 400m freestyle relay to end the meet.
The swimming and diving teams will return to competition following the holiday break at the Herkimer CCC January Invitational, Saturday January 15, 2011.
