Alexander native and 16 year old vocal prodigy, Emily Helenbrook will join the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra at Genesee Community College’s Encore 2010. The annual gala dinner and holiday pops concert will take place on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Genesee’s Batavia Campus. Encore, an annual holiday celebration that supports student scholarships at Genesee is chaired by Joe and Mary Beth Teresi of Batavia. The festivities begin with a Gala Reception and continue with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) performing in the Stuart Steiner Theatre at the College’s Batavia Campus.

Acclaimed soprano Emily Helenbrook, described as a “vocal prodigy,” will join the BPO for the annual holiday pops concert. Helenbrook is studying with Patricia Alexander at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. A junior at Alexander High School, the young singer performed this fall at Carnegie Hall as a winner of the Barry Alexander International Voice Competition. She’s performed as soloist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Ars Nova Musicians, and the Cheektowaga Symphony. Recently included in a “CBS News Sunday Morning” profile on soprano Renee Fleming, Helenbrook has placed first in the Classical Singers Competition at Mannes School of Music in New York City and in the Classical Singer’s Competition at Boston Conservatory, and is a two-time first place winner in the Polish Youth Talent Competition.

The BPO will once again be conducted by renowned conductor, Paul Ferington. Mr. Ferington, hailed as a distinguished local guest conductor, is in his 26th year on the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra’s conducting staff. During this time, he has conducted the BPO in more than 400 concerts. A guest conductor and recital accompanist nationally and internationally, Ferington has received the Beaux Arts Award for Contributions to the Arts from the Niagara Council of the Arts, the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the OperaBuffs of Western New York Educator of the Year Award. In addition to conducting, he is on the music faculty at Buffalo State College and serves as conductor/music director for the new college-community Buffalo State Philharmonic Orchestra.

The evening event begins with a private Prelude Reception with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra conductor, Paul Ferington. For all guests, a Gala Reception Grandioso with sensational food selections will follow at 6:00 p.m. in the William W. Stuart Forum. An Encore Energico Chance drawing to win an opportunity to be a BPO Guest Conductor will be held at 7:30 p.m. Guests will proceed to the Stuart Steiner Theatre for a holiday pops concert at 8:00 p.m. with two-time Grammy Award winning Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and then afterward enjoy Delectable Dessert Finale in the William W. Stuart Forum.
