The Women’s Volleyball will be Wisconsin bound on Tuesday November 16, to play in the 2010 NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament. Genesee earned their bid to the national tournament by winning the District L tournament this past Sunday the 7th. In the championship match Genesee defeated Monroe College of the Bronx in a best three out of five games match. Genesee won the match in three straight games, with scores of 25-19, 25-11, and 25-20.
Round robin pool play took place earlier on Saturday, with pool play between Genesee, Monroe, and Harcum College. In pool play, Genesee defeated Harcum 25-10, 25-15, and 25-11. They then defeated Monroe 25-16, 25-8, and 25-10 to set up a final with Monroe who earlier in the day had defeated Harcum. During pool play Genesee received strong performances from all areas of play, beginning with its trio of setters Shelly Fuller (Trumansburg, NY) who recorded five aces and 20 assists; Mikela Caseria (Mililani, HI) recording seven aces and 26 assists; and Marie Zimmerman (Medina, NY) who recorded six assists. Playing on the outsides, Paige Tilert (Derby, NY) recorded seven kills, 11 digs and six aces; Sarah Ward (Rochester, NY) recorded three aces, 12 kills and eight digs; Austin Bishop-Carimbocas (Toronto, ON) recorded 12 kills and five digs and Maria Antsupova (Ozerek, Russia) recorded eight digs and eight kills. Middles, Megan Curry (Byron, NY) recorded three kills and two blocks; Dawn Dodd (Daleville, IN) recorded eight kills and two assists; Deliane Lessard (Rochester, NY) recorded seven kills and a block, while Hannah Scott-McGrail (Batavia, NY) recorded six kills. Libero Kristie Barger (Lima, NY) had three aces and 11 digs.
The championship match Sunday saw steady serving from Paige Tilert (10 digs, three aces and four kills) and Shelly Fuller (11 assists, five aces) which was key in winning the first game 25-19. The second game was tight until Mikela Caseria got on track both serving and dishing well finishing with 18 assists and six digs. Austin Bishop (seven kills, three digs) and Dawn Dodd (six kills) kept the team on track so that Sarah Ward (eight kills, seven digs, three aces) could end the match with a kill at 25-11. The third game featured the consistent serving of Kristie Barger (two aces and 11 digs) and the timely hitting of Maria Antsupova (five kills, four digs).
The national tournament will be held November 18-20, 2010 at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The tournament will feature teams from sixteen districts spread across the country.
